This summer, Central Illinois experienced another season of powerful storms, with tornadoes touching down throughout the region and leaving destruction in their wake. Illinois has seen an unusually active tornado season, with communities across the state experiencing severe weather, damaging winds, and tornado outbreaks.

At Hidden Grove, we watched the radar, listened to the wind, and hoped for the best.

When the skies finally cleared, we discovered that one of the property's beautiful mature trees had fallen.

The incredible part?

It missed the house.

Not by yards.

By feet.

The home that has welcomed families, couples, and travelers seeking peace remained untouched. No one was hurt. No damage was done to the cabin. What could have been a devastating day instead became something entirely different—a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change, and how precious every moment truly is.

Sometimes Nature Reminds Us Who's Really in Charge

One of the things we love most about Hidden Grove is that it sits quietly among the trees.

It's a place where mornings begin with birdsong instead of traffic. Where evenings end beneath a canopy of stars. Where guests reconnect with nature, with loved ones, and often with themselves.

But living alongside nature also means respecting its power.

The same forests that provide shade in the summer, brilliant colors in the fall, and peaceful walks year-round also remind us that they have stories of their own.

This summer, nature wrote another chapter.

And thankfully, it ended with gratitude instead of tragedy.

When the cleanup was complete, one thing remained.

The stump.

Rather than removing every trace of the fallen tree, we decided to leave it exactly where it is.

Not as a reminder of the storm.

But as a reminder of what didn't happen.

It's become a symbol of gratitude.

Beginning now, we invite every guest who visits Hidden Grove to participate in a simple tradition.

Bring a small, respectful token—a painted rock, a tiny wooden heart, a meaningful coin, or another small keepsake—and leave it on or around the stump.

Not as graffiti.

Not as decoration.

But as a quiet acknowledgment of gratitude.

Gratitude for safe travels.

Gratitude for time with family.

Gratitude for peaceful weekends.

Gratitude that Hidden Grove was spared.

Over time, we hope this simple stump becomes something much more than what remains of a fallen tree. We hope it becomes a collection of stories from the people who have found rest, joy, healing, laughter, and connection here.
